The waiata was written by a group of people (including Ardre Foote, Faye Wilson-Hill, Jo Murray, Robyn Irving, Susan Botting and Peter Heard) at the 2004 Energiser Hui in Manaia, Northland. The waiata is sung by Ardre Foote from Te Mauri Tau in Whaingaroa, and the music was engineered by Brent Holt from CSD Producations Ltd.
