This week’s homework is due back on Monday Week 5 (18th May) so can you please remind the students to return it then - thanks
Unfortunately there are some students who regularly forget to return their homework on Monday each week or complete any at all. The purpose of homework is to develop study skills so your child is prepared for college and is able to work unsupervised after school. We are doing them a disservice if we don’t encourage students to develop these skills by completing homework each week.
- 15 spelling words will come home each Monday. Please practise these each night and there will be a test on Friday.
- Kiwi Kids News Sheet - (This is due on Monday 18th) This homework follows a term theme and this terms theme is ‘My Community’ which ties in nicely with our schools overall theme of Connectedness. Below is an outline of what is expected in this homework:
- MY COMMUNITY– Every week there is a task for you to complete. Detailed instructions are on the website and a template is provided in your workbook.
- READING – You must read for 15mins each night. After you have completed your reading please get it signed by a parent / caregiver.
- VOCAB / GRAMMAR – This term you have a weekly word activity to complete. This term we are looking at synonyms/antonym and doing some dictionary work.
- IN THE NEWS – Visit the Kiwi Kids News website and write the title of news articles that interest you.
- MATHS ZONE – Complete the maths puzzle for this week.
Please consider that it would be beneficial if homework was worked on each night. Students should also have time to do their basic facts practice and any personal reading too.
Any concerns, please let me know.

This week’s homework is due back on Monday Week 4 (11th May) so can you please remind the students to return it then - thanks!
Unfortunately there are some students who regularly forget to return their homework on Tuesday each week or complete any at all. The purpose of homework is to develop study skills so your child is prepared for college and is able to work unsupervised after school. We are doing them a disservice if we don’t encourage students to develop these skills by completing homework each week.
15 spelling words will come home each Monday and there will be a test each Friday.
This term we are trying a something new for our homework. Mrs Kennedy has joined our team onto Kiwi Kids New, a website for New Zealand students and part of the website is for homework. Please feel free to go onto the website and have a look around. There are some very interesting news items and topics. The class will also be using this website regularly as part of their reading activities in the class. It’s another tool to support their learning.

2 . Spelling
- I have given each child 15 words to learn, some of these are topic words and
some are from the Essential Spelling Lists. We will be testing these words once
a week, on a Friday, so any encouragement from you for your child to practise
will be greatly appreciated. I have
also given out a copy of all of the Essential Lists. By the end of the year each student will need
to know how to spell all of the Essential Lists. The
spelling test will be on Thursday this week.
3 .
Home reading - I have given everyone a Reading
Log to note down what they are reading at home.
This could be magazines, chapter books, comics, graphic novels etc. If your child visits the library, anything
they read from there can also be noted down.
If they like to research on the computer, this too can be noted
down. It doesn’t have to be every day;
however a weekly overview is expected. I
will check this every Monday.
4 .
Grammar
– Two weeks ago I gave out a text called ‘One
Step, Two Step’. This week the
activity is ‘G’ – Spare Parts - Conjunctions.
I have shared a presentation to help students with ‘Conjunctions’ on
their Google Docs.
5 .
Basic Facts – please encourage your
child to practice their basic facts every day as these are crucial for your
child to know fluently in order to succeed with maths from now on. (Check the Basic Facts Ladder, which is in
their homework clear file, for ideas on what to work on)
Next term we will have a choice about our homework and if we
want to complete it using the internet.
More information will follow next term.
All students have their own Study Ladder log-on and they
have extended hours on Study Ladder.
They have great games etc. for students to practice basic facts,
spelling etc. so please encourage the use of this great learning aid where you
can. Any concerns with homework, please
let me know. If you need my cell number
to contact me also let me know.
Have a great holiday.
